He is the Program Director for the California Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CalCASA). His position focuses on improving the scope and quality of CASA advocacy throughout California and in sharing the insights gained by CASA staff and volunteers with policy- and law-making bodies. Derek serves on California’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Children in Foster Care, a statewide body convened by the Judicial Council to conduct a two-year examination on how to improve outcomes for California’s foster children. He is also a member of the California Education Collaborative for Children in Foster Care and the California Permanency for Youth Task Force.
