Citizen Tasmania provides people from refugee, migrant, and asylum-seeking backgrounds with the means to tackle challenges within their communities through education, empowerment, and connection. Its programs improve the lives of refugees by providing them with advocacy skills, social support, and understanding of political systems affecting their lives, helping refugees see their value to transform oppressive systems. Citizen’s long-term goal is to create successful resettlement outcomes for refugees by helping them shift from surviving to thriving.
Personal Bio
Grace Williams, the founder and director of Citizen Tasmania, has directed films, published works, and presented internationally on the importance of engaging communities by empowering grassroots activism. Grace received the Tasmanian Human Rights Award Youth Award in 2018 for her documentary film Citizen, which engaged communities in important discussions about human rights and diversity in Tasmania. Grace developed the Ethic of Thriving, a new model for refugee settlement dedicated to elevating the agency and interconnection of newly arrived migrants by promoting meaningful integration through existing community organizations to create stronger pathways between skills and meaningful employment for refugees. Grace graduated from the University of Tasmania Law School with a VC Award for global leadership. She was recently selected as the first Australian activist to join Nile Rodger’s New York–based We Are Family Foundation Youth to The Front and was published by Australian Quarterly, Oxford University Press, and Black Inc.
