organization overview

Unapologetically HERS (UAHERS) is a Black feminist, abolitionist learning organization that develops leadership among incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and gender-expansive people. Through peer-led research, leadership training, and professional skill-building, UAHERS equips impacted leaders to advocate for policy change, strengthen community organizations, and transform the systems that shape their lives. Its vision is a future where the people most impacted by incarceration are recognized as experts and decision makers, leading movements, institutions, and policymaking to replace punishment with care, accountability, and collective liberation.

Personal Bio

Aminah Elster is the co-founder and executive director of Unapologetically HERS. Aminah’s work is rooted in her own experience navigating incarceration and reentry. After returning home, she witnessed how the knowledge and leadership of formerly incarcerated people were routinely excluded from decision-making spaces. Determined to change that dynamic, she built Unapologetically HERS. Aminah is also the founder of Proximate Strategies Consulting, where she designs leadership and workforce innovation initiatives for formerly incarcerated or system-involved professionals. Her work has been recognized through fellowships, philanthropic support, and collaborations with national advocacy, research, and policy organizations.
