Akiyu Hatano spent her childhood years in Japan and Texas, and graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Masters in Education. She worked as an educator and social justice advocate in New York City, San Francisco and Oakland. Akiyu later worked as the Education Program Officer for the Walter and Elise Haas Foundation. She remained active in her local community as a board member and board president of the Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC), and as the “Team Mom” for the Oakland High School Wrestling Team (Go Wildcats!). After falling unexpectedly ill on June 28, 2006, Akiyu slipped into a coma and passed away quietly on June 30, 2006 in the presence of her husband, family members, and friends. She is deeply missed.
