bold idea
Make the special education system and IEP process in the United States easier for students and families to navigate by embedding AI-powered equity infrastructure into schools nationwide.
organization overview
Expert IEP builds infrastructure to ensure families can understand, navigate, and advocate within the special education and disability access systems. Expert IEP uses AI to help families understand and act on complex legal and educational documents, such as an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The platform also flags potential concerns, helping guide families through their rights and options. Having supported thousands of families across the United States, Expert IEP’s vision is a world where no family is excluded from decisions about their child’s education because the system was too complicated to understand.
Personal Bio
Antoinette Banks is the founder and chief executive officer of Expert IEP. Her work began when her daughter was diagnosed with autism and given a prognosis that suggested she would never thrive. As a single parent facing an opaque system with no roadmap, Antoinette built the tools she wished had existed. What started as a spreadsheet became a platform that has grown to support thousands of families across the United States. Before Expert IEP, Antoinette built her career in IT and network infrastructure, serving faith-based organizations and supporting humanitarian work related to women’s education rights. A doctoral candidate in learning and mind sciences and computational social science at the University of California, Davis, Antoinette is a Ford Foundation Fellow, Pahara Fellow, and a Black Ambition Grand Prize Winner. She has spoken at the United Nations, the White House, and Harvard University, and published her book, Better Than a Diagnosis: A Single Parent’s Guide to Autism, in 2019.
