On a mission to assist an estimated 300 million smallholder farmers in Africa sustainably improve productivity, UjuziKilimo collects and analyzes farm and soil data through affordable sensor technology. Within three minutes, farmers receive personalized and actionable recommendations via mobile phone on how to achieve optimal conditions for the crop they desire to grow, eliminating all the guesswork in farm input usage. UjuziKilimo’s vision is to change the narrative of smallholder farming from one solely about survival to an empowered, knowledge-based community of fearless risk-takers and adaptive problem-solvers at the cutting edge of technology and innovation.
Personal Bio
Dickson Ayuka is the co-founder and head of business development of UjuziKilimo Solutions, an organization tackling low productivity among smallholder farmers through provision of precision technologies for monitoring soil fertility. Growing up in a community of farmers, he experienced the frustration of unpredictable weather patterns and a lack of extension services to provide technical support in farming. Prior to UjuziKilimo, Dickson founded and exited Mkulima Feeds, where he was producing alternative protein for use in processing of livestock feeds. Dickson is an Ashoka Changemaker (2019) and has won many awards for his work, including grants from Google Impact Challenge Kenya (2018) and ClimateLaunchpad (2018). He was named a Cisco Global Problem Solver in 2018 and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2015. He is also an alumnus of the Global Social Benefit Institute Program, the Young African Leaders Initiative Fellowship Program (2018), and the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Program (2015). He holds a degree in civil engineering from the Technical University of Kenya. Dickson is a 2019 Echoing Green Fellow.
