Digital Rohi is an education-centered connectivity ecosystem tackling the severe digital exclusion faced by pastoralist nomadic communities in Pakistan’s Cholistan Desert. It connects nomadic mobile schools and migrating settlements with portable solar-powered community internet, where traditional infrastructure has never reached. By pairing connectivity with teacher support, digital skills training, and community ownership, Digital Rohi enables marginalized communities to access education, information, and digital opportunities. Its vision is a future where last-mile desert communities are fully connected, learning, and no longer invisible in the digital age.
Personal Bio
Muhammad Zubair Madni is a social entrepreneur and the founder of Digital Rohi. He grew up in Pakistan’s Cholistan Desert, where schools were scarce and internet access was unreliable. Having never attended formal school himself, he relied on intermittent connectivity to educate himself, shaping his determination to ensure that children in remote communities can access education without leaving their homes or way of life. Muhammad went on to receive a master’s degree in digital technologies, communication and education from the University of Manchester as a Chevening Scholar. He has been a visiting IREX Scholar at Saint Martin’s University and his work has been recognized by Pakistan’s National Youth Award, the International Telecommunication Union’s Generation Connect program, and the Moonshot Borderless Award.
