Personal Bio

Rafael Campo was born in 1964 in Dover, New Jersey. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Medical School, he currently teaches and practices general internal medicine at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where his medical practice serves mostly Latinos, the GLBTQ population, and people with HIV infection. He is also on the faculty of the Lesley University Creative Writing MFA program. He is the author of many books of poetry and a collection of essays. His work has received various awards including the National Poetry Series Award, Lambda Literary Awards, and a Pushcart Prize. Rafael is a recipient of the Annual Achievement Award from the National Hispanic Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he has served as a visiting writer at Amherst College, the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana and at Brandeis University. In May 2007, Duke University Press published his fifth book of poems, The Enemy, which won the Sheila Motton Book Prize from the New England Poetry Club.
