TWEET (Transgender Welfare Equity and Empowerment Trust) Foundation, a community-led organization in India, aims to build a self-sufficient and vibrant trans movement in India. In the short term, TWEET provides crisis support, short shelter stay, skill-building, and employment opportunities to young trans people. For the long term, TWEET works with stakeholders to mainstream advocacy and build awareness. Its goal is to accelerate the social and economic development and well-being of the transgender community in India.
Personal Bio
Shaman Gupta, co-chair of the TWEET Foundation, identifies as a transman and has been working for trans rights since 2016. Shaman has worked with thousands of young trans people across India to provide them with legal, health, and employment support. Shaman has also focused on community building and regional leadership building of transmen with support of grants from the UNDP, the International Trans Fund, and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of India. He was awarded the Dalai Lama Fellowship 2020 for his work with the transmen community in India. Shaman has a degree in engineering and is also passionate about equitable education and educational technology. He has worked in education nonprofits and for-profits for over eight years. Shaman has worked across various roles, including operations, product design, fundraising, and business development. He wishes to create equitable access to opportunities and to enable socioeconomic well-being for transgender persons in India.
