bold idea
Save lives in under-resourced communities by providing healthcare workers with free and open access to relevant guidelines and clinical support tools using mobile technology.
organization overview
The Open Medicine Project empowers frontline healthcare workers by creating clinical-support mobile applications which are based on local and relevant in-country standards. The apps freely disseminate vital content and decision support tools to the pockets and hands of healthcare providers. They are developed together with local health authorities in South Africa and in other under-serviced countries. This ensures best practice within limited resource constraints, less errors and better patient outcomes in Rural Primary Care, Basic Emergency Care, HIV and TB management in South Africa and other underresourced countries.
Personal Bio
Mohammed co-founded and directs The Open Medicine Project, which seeks to improve healthcare through technology. He is an emergency doctor who has worked with Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Libya. Mohammed has experienced firsthand the need in the field and the failure that occurs due to overstretched workers in difficult circumstances. Believing in the value of simple tools and embracing mobile technology, he co-founded The Open Medicine Project with friend and fellow doctor Yaseen Khan. Mohammed is currently completing his Ph.D. in Emergency Medecine. He was named by the Mail and Guardian as one the top 200 youngsters in South Africa in 2012, named one of the top 100 GOOD people in the world by the GOOD foundation in 2013 and awarded a TED Fellowship in 2014 for the Mobile Triage application, which aims to save lives by decreasing errors in triage.
